If you have ever dreamed of stepping into a real life fairy tale village, then I have the corner of the world for you. Cue: Gruyères, Switzerland. A place where you can feast on delectable cheese and chocolate, amongst medieval architecture and castles with the Swiss Alps as a back drop. Seriously? What more could you want?! Staying at hotel Fleur de Lys Gruyeres completes your whimsical getaway. Lily Flower – symbolic of French heritage and culture First and foremost, there are only a handful of accommodations available in Gruyères. Secondly, this picturesque village, just shy of only eleven square miles, is very walkable. Luckily, the majority of points of interest are all very walkable to one another. I arrived in Gruyères via train. From the train station, we walked with our luggage all the way to the place where you see the “Gruyères sign” and then scaled a decently steep hill. Eventually, you’ll be greeted by the medieval stone arch entering the main part of town. Albeit, many points of interest are a short distance from one another, in terms of location you couldn’t ask for a more centrally located hotel. No, literally, it is located smack dab in the center of the prime center of town. This not only makes for convenience, but beautiful views! If you’re pressed for time, let me explicitly tell you that hotel Fleur de Lys Gruyeres is one of the best hotels I’ve ever stayed in. By no means is it the “fanciest” that I’ve ever stayed in or the room the most luxurious, but there is not a single negative thing that can be said about it even if I tried to find something. They are a boutique hotel that simply understands hospitality. Because, from my experience, sometimes the hotels that have the finest chocolate waiting on your bed or the most ornate flower arrangements in the lobby can’t get the basics right. Truly, when it comes to being far from home and staying in a hotel, the simple things are the most important. We felt at home at Fleur de Lys. Further, the staff and those that run the hotel are exceptional. You can tell that them treating us well is because they truly care about their guests. From the restaurant service, to the concierge advice, to holding our luggage while we went on an adventure in Molèson for the day, our stay at Fleur de Lys was, frankly, perfect (yes, I said perfect) from beginning to end. There is an on site restaurant, which is very convenient after a day of adventuring. The same room that serves a continental breakfast in the mornings, converts in the evenings to a sitting and game room. Every night, the staff prepares the fireplace with fresh logs, so you can enjoy a cup of a tea in front of a roaring fire. There are also board games available and a selection of books, if you wish. It really is a wonderful way to end the day. The entire main square of Gruyères is really like being on a movie set. The front of the hotel faces the sprawling cobblestone center of town and central fountain. Whereas, when you exit the rear of the hotel… look at the views that await you! You can also go for a brief walk and enjoy the scenery. I mean… look at this! The restaurant at Hotel Fleur de Lys is excellent. You can eat on the patio and enjoy a view of the main square, with the alps off in the distance or you can eat inside. Basically, if I returned to Gruyères and wasn’t staying at Fleur de Lys, I would still eat at their restaurant. I had the most delectable fondue experience on the patio. As the cool, crisp spring air bit at my cheek, I was warmed by the hot cheesy goodness and the heat lamps as a consolation. Altogether, I couldn’t imagine a more quintessentially Swiss moment than the one I had on the patio of Fleur de Lys. The service is absolutely excellent – the lovely woman with a short brunette bob, who seems to also help run the inn took great care of us when we ate on the patio or in the restaurant. Additionally, she recommend we try the house meringue, which is a specialty of the region. On a different evening, we ate inside the hotel restaurant.Because it was a bit later at night, so the restaurant was fairly quiet save of a large party boisterously laughing, chatting and catching up with each other. Tip: Comparatively, as far as meals in Switzerland and hotel restaurants go, Fleur de Lys Gruyeres is pretty fairly priced. Fondue CHF 30, Salaison Plate (“salted meats”) CHF 13.50, Pickles CHF 3.50 While all the hotels I stayed at in Switzerland served similar complimentary breakfast fare, this one had a very nice spread of options. Every morning, there was a giant basket of fresh baked goods – ranging from various croissants and pastries to choose from. Everything from cereal and fresh fruits, to an assortment of jams and spreads, fresh eggs that you could boil to order, a selection of cheeses and meats, juices, coffee and a wide variety of teas were available each morning. The guest room’s are on the petite side, but really, how big of a room do you need for two people if your main intent is to explore all day? The bed might not look comfortable, but it was extremely soft and pleasant to sleep in. The room is well equipped, particularly for being low frills (as many hotels in Switzerland seemed to be). While the room leaned minimalistic, it had a desk, vanity, nightstand and a mirrored armoire to hang your clothes. The room was basic, but warm and very cozy. Hotel Fleur de Lys Gruyeres does have an elevator, in case that’s a concern If you are a fan of minimal crowds, definitely consider visiting in the early spring. I visited in April and it was glorious – in terms of the weather and how uncrowded it was. If you want to visit during max action, summer is the high season in Switzerland.
