I stumbled out of the train station in Chur, Switzerland and collected myself so I could check how far away we were from Hotel Zunfthaus Zur Rebleuten. “Roughly about a ten minute walk” my map reveals. Oh yes. We’re walking this. Because as a car dependent American, I relish in the opportunity to “walk everywhere” when in Europe. Don’t you? Turns out, the information was accurate. It was a brisk walk from the train station. Ultimately, this was also a great way to peek around town. What’s interesting was walking through the more ‘modern’ part of the city, near the train station and seeing Chur transform into the medieval renaissance it once was, when we neared ‘Old Town Chur.’ Don’t worry. Honestly, I had never heard of it before planning my Switzerland trip. A major attraction for me was taking a scenic train trip on the Glacier Express. Chur was one of its stops. When I learned that Chur is the oldest city in Switzerland, the history nerd in me immediately knew it was somewhere I needed to go. Thus, it ended up being my last stop on the Glacier Express. Chur is located in the canton of Graubünden, which, is also interchangeably called the canton of Grisons. The historic city is located in the eastern part of the country, in the Rhine Valley. Incidentally, it’s also super close to the border of Liechtenstein, too. Like, we’re talking 28 minutes by car close. You could easily do a day trip into the country and return that evening. That was my original intention, but, since I was only in Chur for a few days, I wanted to take my time exploring and taking in the old town. For all intents and purposes, I don’t see how you could ask for a more well – located hotel. If your plan is to explore Old Town Chur (and it should be!), this hotel is a great option. Besides being walking distance from the train station, it’s a brisk walk to many points of attraction, restaurants, coffee houses and an expansive variety of shops. Tip: the city of Chur is pronounced “koor” not ch-urh. The thing that I’ve observed about stays in Europe, is that they are often pretty basic, yet, not really inexpensive. Unless, of course, you’re interested in dropping some serious cash. However, Hotel Zunfthaus zur Rebleuten is a lovely stay that provides more than just the basics. The hotel offers some comforts and thoughtful touches. It’s important to keep in mind that Hotel Zunfthaus Zur Rebleuten is housed in a building from 1662. In fact, the oldest part of the hotel dates back to 1438! Albeit, this means you should not expect the following here: a swimming pool, elevator, spa, gym facilities or a salon. Basically what you are getting with this hotel is an authentic piece of Chur’s past, and a historical stay with a medieval flair. I’d say that’s pretty darn special, wouldn’t you? Marco, the chef behind the hotel’s restaurant and Jacqueline Rudolph have owned and operated Hotel Zunfthaus Zur Rebleuten since 2017. Jacqueline is a trained hotel and restaurateur. Marco greeted us upon check in and was extremely hospitable and welcoming. Knowing our interest, he gave us a tour of the entire hotel and provided some interesting historical facts. Marco is genuinely personable and you can tell he cares a lot about his guests having a good experience. It’s important to note that Chur is located in the Swiss – German part of Switzerland. Everything has German influence – the food, language, culture, architecture and social interactions. We did find the service outside of Marco’s to be… well… a bit cold, staccato and aloof at times. However, never unprofessional or explicitly rude by any means. The hotel’s on site restaurant is actually a very popular and well liked restaurant in Chur. One that residents flock to for a romantic dinner under the glow of the historic chandeliers or to celebrate important occasions. I happen to be celebrating my birthday during my stay and actually had my birthday dinner at the hotel’s restaurant. The cuisine served at this restaurant will give you a solid sample of Swiss-German cuisine. Your meal begins with house made bread and pâté. The restaurant’s fare is catergorized as Swiss, Central European and Graubünden cuisine. The menu appears to change frequently, or at minimum, seasonally. I really enjoyed my experience at this restaurant. There were at least two others celebrating their birthday at there that night. When I find myself in Chur again, I’m not sure that I’d go out of my way to dine here again, but I would dine here again if I stayed at the hotel. Tip: The entire menu is written in German, so have your translator app ready. Unless, of course, you can read and understand German. There is no denying it. The breakfast at Hotel Zunfthaus Zur Rebleuten is wonderful. Do you want coffee, tea and juice? You got it. No need to choose. You can have it all. There is a delightful selection of tea to choose from. Fresh baked bread and croissants are available daily. Your table is also served with various meats and cheeses – including Raclette. Atop the intricately carved wooden tabletops, you’ll find dried fruits, nuts, granola, cereal, apples and a large assortment of jams, yogurts and various spreads. Tip: if you visit during the summer months, you can enjoy breakfast on the open patio with a lovely view. Like many hotels I’ve stayed in across Switzerland and Europe, the room was pretty basic but comfortable. Want to know my favorite part of the room? Look at that view! Each morning, when I’d look out the window, I was very close to breaking out in song. Hotel Zunfthaus Zur Rebleuten has a total of three floors with Guest rooms. Floor number three has great views! One unique thing about this hotel is that there is a coffee and tea station located on each floor, versus in each room. This kinda makes sense, considering the limited space in each room. The room is simple, but comfortable and efficient. Since I was exploring Chur from morning until night, I really was just in my room to sleep. The bathroom is extremely small, by any standards, but it got the job done! Overall, when in Chur, I would stay here again! In terms of mobility accessibility, it’s important to emphasize that this hotel has no elevator and lots of stairs. At the time of my visit, there didn’t seem to be anyone available to assist with luggage, so you’ll need to carry all your belongings up several flights of stairs. Also, there is an on site bar at the hotel and smoking is allowed inside the bar. Fun fact: Chur has more bars per square foot than any other city in Switzerland. Check these out! Hotel Zunfthaus Zur Rebleuten looks so charming! The blend of medieval atmosphere and modern comfort is exactly what I’d love for an unforgettable holiday. Thanks for sharing!
It really is a nice blend of both, exactly!
Great post! My family and I just returned from Switzerland over Christmas but would love to go back & explore in the summer. Chur sounds like the perfect place! I had definitely been calling it Churr and not Koor – thank you for that clarification!
Thank you Tanya. Don’t worry, I thought it was Churr too!
This hotel looks like a nice place to stay with everything you need. The restaurant sounds delightful too. If locals frequent the place, you know the food must be good.
Exactly!
I would book that hotel solely for that breakfast spread! Actually, all the food at this hotel looks magnificent but a breakfast raclette in Switzerland is definitely on our bucketlist
Right? It was definitely a major highlight of the hotel!
